Blood Pressure Calculator — Check BP Category & Health Risk
About This Tool
The Blood Pressure Calculator evaluates your blood pressure readings using the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) standards. It determines your health category and calculates additional cardiorespiratory metrics like Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP).
How to Use
- Enter your systolic pressure (top reading) in mmHg.
- Enter your diastolic pressure (bottom reading) in mmHg.
- Provide your pulse rate (optional).
- Review your calculated BP category, MAP, and corresponding medical recommendations instantly.
Detailed Explanation & Worked Example
Blood pressure is the lateral force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the body's blood vessels. It is recorded as two numbers: Systolic (the pressure when the heart beats and pumps blood) and Diastolic (the pressure when the heart rests between beats).
How to Take an Accurate Blood Pressure Reading
To ensure your readings are not artificially high due to stress or physical exertion, follow these guidelines:
- Rest: Sit quietly for 5 minutes before taking the measurement. Do not talk during the measurement.
- Positioning: Sit with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor (do not cross your legs). Support your arm on a flat surface so that the cuff is at heart level.
- Avoid: Do not smoke, drink caffeinated beverages, or exercise for 30 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure.
- Cuff Size: Make sure the cuff fits your upper arm comfortably. A cuff that is too small can register artificially high readings.
What is Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)?
MAP represents the average pressure flowing through your arteries during a single cardiac cycle. It is calculated using the formula: MAP = (Systolic + 2 * Diastolic) / 3. A MAP of at least 60 mmHg is necessary to sustain blood flow to vital organs.
