Why does my 500 GB drive show less space in Windows?

Hard drive manufacturers use decimal GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), but operating systems like Windows report storage in binary GiB (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). A drive labelled 500 GB actually contains only about 465 GiB — which is what Windows shows as "465 GB". No storage is missing; it is just a unit difference.

Quick Reference

1 KB = 1,000 bytes  |  1 KiB = 1,024 bytes

1 MB = 1,000 KB  |  1 MiB = 1,024 KiB

1 GB = 1,000 MB  |  1 GiB = 1,024 MiB

1 TB = 1,000 GB  |  1 TiB = 1,024 GiB

1 Byte = 8 Bits

1 GB ≈ 0.931 GiB

About This Tool

The Data Size Converter lets you instantly convert between all common digital storage units — Bits, Bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB — and their binary IEC equivalents (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). Toggle between Decimal (SI) and Binary (IEC) modes, enter your value, choose a unit, and see a full conversion table update instantly. Perfect for understanding file sizes, storage capacity, RAM specs, and networking throughput.

How to Use

  1. Choose Decimal (SI) for hard drive / network units, or Binary (IEC) for RAM / OS file sizes.
  2. Type your number in the Value field and select the source unit from the dropdown.
  3. Read off any target unit from the instant conversion table — all rows update in real time.
